Wal Mart Is Looking Out For Us And Helping To Avoid A Global Food Shortage

Apparently the world is running out of rice, according to an article via Reuters and a little snippet that I heard and may have half paid attention to yesterday on NPR.

Per the article, Sam's Club/Wal-Mart, purveyors of poor, are limiting the number of bags that one may purchase. The article states that they are "limiting sales of Jasmine, Basmati and long grain white rice 'due to recent supply and demand trends.'" (Please note that healthy and NOT poison brown rice is not affected; at least as can be inferred from the above.)

The article goes on to state that: "Sam's Club, the No. 2 U.S. warehouse club operator, is limiting sales of the 20-pound (9 kg), bulk bags of rice to four bags per customer per visit, and is working with suppliers to ensure the products remain in stock."

International issues aside (which were addressed in the NPR piece), it appears that the stateside problems may be stemming from fatties and poors hoarding. So you can only buy EIGHTY POUNDS OF RICE PER VISIT, what's the big deal? It's not like you needed the carbs anyway.


Side note: Don't think that you can be clever and Google image search "famine" for an accompanying image; it's not cute, it's not clever, and it is, to be candid, quite sobering. After you've done that (because you know that you will) go visit Rice Man to wash away the sad.

Best Music of 2008 [Last.FM gobbles our scrobbles]

Internet radio / social network / music discover tool Last.FM has released its Best of 2008 list. There are going to be dozens of "best" lists coming out in the next few weeks, but this one should command your attention. The list is not based on radio play, and it is not based on best selling albums. It is based on the number of times we (that's the royal "we" in all it's regal garb) have played tracks from our iTunes, iPods, Songbirds, or any other player that allows scrobbling. It is based on what we wanted to hear. We pressed play. We made the playlists. The only fault I can find lies in the Top 10 Tracks, which basically MGMT and Colplay. But that's what you get with raw data. To me, the Artists list is the most compelling. You will find no Kanye West on this list; no Britney and no Janet. You will only find the artists played incessantly and obsessively.

Celebrate Halloween with Peter Squires's New Video, "Witch"

I don't usually do festive or holiday posts. In fact, the closest I get is writing some kind of seasonal bent against a track, and only then when I've had too much coffee and can't find any relation to a song other than what the weather is doing.
