Les Savy Fav
The Hold Steady
Whoah. My. God.
Seattle's Capitol Hill Block Party has always been a fantastic showcase of local and national talent, and great excuse to get boozy in the afternoon (like we need an excuse), and this year is no exception. Actually, this year seems surprisingly strong, in that my perception of the Block Party of years past has tended towards more big name NW acts. (Not that I'm complaining -- I've had the privilege of, literally, walking down the street from my house and seeing The Gossip, Built To Spill, Sleater Kinney, and Pretty Girls Make Graves, among many, many others.)
This year's thus far confirmed lineup is absolutely boner inducing. It includes band du jour (or band du hier? I can't keep up.) Vampire Weekend, new Duck & Cover favorites the Dodos, damn-it's-about-time-people-figured-out-how-rad-she-is Kimya Dawson, and two of the hands down best ever live bands -- Les Savy Fav and The Hold Steady. And a "Surprise Guest." No amount of guessing here will be anything other than wishful thinking, though if we get some inside info (which we are apt to do), we just might pass it on. Unless we are sworn to silence under threat of death, which has happened.
However, I just have to say it -- LES FUCKING SAVY FAV!!! Best live show ever, and you never know what you're going to get yourself into. Favorite Les Savy Fav moment -- Tim Harrington, in a highschool wrestling uniform standing on a pinball machine singing into my face -- I just stood there and beamed and swooned. Or maybe it was when he inserted a bottle of wine into his wrestling onesie (in a very phallic manner, natch) and leapt up and down -- to obscene effect. Or perhaps it was seeing them, for the very first time, opening for Modest Mouse at the Crystal Ballroom back in 2001; Tim scaled the walls and swung from window to window, singing into the street below. Yeah, best live band ever. Ever. If you make it out there, look for Duck & Cover; we'll be the two boys dancing our legs to the knees, periodically screaming out song titles. (Historically, this does happen -- just ask Fuck about the "Scribble Dibble Incident of 1999" at Kirby's Beer Store in Wichita, KS.)
